Not all asthma is the same. Asthma varies from person to person and can be categorised based on how severe it is or what characteristics it has.1
ASTHMA SEVERITY LEVELS
Asthma can be classed by how severe it is — mild, moderate and severe, which is determined by the amount of treatment required to control your symptoms and exacerbations.1 Talk to your doctor to learn more about your asthma severity level.
Mild asthma
Asthma is well controlled with
low doses of medication for
symptom relief 1


Moderate asthma
Asthma is well controlled with
low or moderate doses of
medication for symptom relief
and maintenance 1
Severe asthma
Asthma that requires high doses of medication
to control symptoms or
remains uncontrolled
despite being on
high doses of medication 1

ASTHMA CHARACTERISTICS
There are many types of asthma that are based on its characteristics, such as who it affects or what it is caused by.1
Some of the most-common asthma groups based on characteristics are:1,3
Allergic asthma (aka atopic asthma)
Caused by allergies such as dust, pollen and food
Non-allergic asthma
Caused by non-allergic triggers such as viruses
Adult-onset asthma
When asthma happens for the first time in adult life,
usually non-allergic
Asthma with persistent airflow limitation
Thought to occur due to changes in airway structure
Asthma with obesity
Obesity is the most-common co-existing condition with asthma
